This luxurious handcrafted game board is an exceptional piece of Persian artistry, designed for playing backgammon on one side and chess on the other.
When fully opened, the backgammon board unveils a butterfly-shaped layout, framed with the finest quality Khatam Kari (Persian marquetry). At the center, two elegant hexagonal Khatam inlays each contain gilded, hand-painted designs, featuring colorful, intricate, and magical motifs.
The seating area for the game pieces and the four surrounding walls are meticulously crafted from Khatam, a sophisticated mosaic of metal, wood, and bone, assembled by master artisans with precision and care.
The white sections of the backgammon board are made from natural oyster material, adorned with delicate decorative patterns. Surrounding the playing field, the top white edge is also oyster-based, embellished with gilded designs at the four corners and the center, interlinked with elegant black spiral patterns. The outermost edge features an artistic composition of small white and brown wooden pieces, carefully placed to enhance both texture and contrast.
On the chessboard side, the squares alternate between Khatam marquetry and oyster, each bordered by slim wooden strips to elevate visual appeal and distinction. The gilding art on all four sides of the chessboard showcases intricate visual designs, painted in gold, green, blue, and other vibrant hues, reflecting the depth of Persian artistic tradition.
For added protection, when the board is closed, small wooden protectors are positioned at each outer corner to shield the Khatam inlay from impact. These are precisely installed by skilled carpenters to ensure both durability and elegance.
Khatam Kari is one of the most refined and traditional crafts of Iran, known for its delicate inlay of tiny geometric shapes that form mesmerizing and harmonious patterns. The creation of each piece involves the meticulous assembly of materials like wood, bone, and metal, with designs ranging from 3 to 400 miniature triangles. Originating from Isfahan, Khatam Kari is globally recognized for its precision and artistic beauty, serving both decorative and functional purposes.
Gilding, known in Persian as Tazhib, is the art of design, painting, and embellishment with delicate brushwork, using fine natural sable and cat hair brushes. Gilding often incorporates plant motifs (Islamic and Khatai styles), geometric knots, and occasionally human and animal forms. This art form graces manuscripts, artworks, and crafts, adding an opulent and decorative finish through its use of gold, vibrant colors, and intricate patterns.
